Back when I was a Librarian, we lived and breathed by the Publisher's Weekly Bestseller List. It was my responsibility to print or photocopy the list every week and update our bestseller's display. (Also to purchase extra copies of particularly popular bestsellers.)
I haven't looked at the list in YEARS. Some of these surprise me:
A new translation of The Iliad made the list?!
Ken Follett is still alive?? (I looked him up, he's only 74.)
Danielle Steel is still alive?? ( I just looked her up, she's only 76 and has been married five(!) times. To be fair, I also looked up Ken Follett, he's only been married twice.)
I see some Christmas-themed books on the list!
I see a Disney manga! (“The Battle for Pumpkin King”)

I will forever associate this with deep winter with its long, dark nights.
At the very first light of dawn
Up from the horizon
Came a black cloud
And in its midst, Adad bellowed continually.
Sullat and Hanis were going at the fore,
Throne-bearers travelling mountain and land.
Erragal was ripping out the mooring poles;
Ninurta, as he went, made the weirs overflow.
The Anunnaki bore torches aloft,
Setting the land aglow with their brilliance.
The calm of the storm god passed across the sky
And all that was bright was turned into gloom.
The wide land lies like a broken urn.
One whole day the south storm blew
Gathering speed as it went;
Like a battle the cataclysm passed over the people.
One person could not see,
Nor recognize, another in the destruction.
Even the gods took fright at the Deluge!
They withdrew to the heaven of Anu.
Curled up in fear like dogs,
The goddess Ishtar, screaming like a woman in childbirth,
Belet-ili, the sweet-voiced, wailed aloud:
“Indeed the past has truly turned to clay,
Because I spoke evil in the assembly of the gods.
How did I speak evil in the assembly of the gods,
And declare a war to destroy my people?
It is I that gave birth to them - my own people!
Now like so many fish they will fill the sea.”
The gods, the Anunnaki, were weeping with her...

Review: Riddle Songs by Stef Conner
Review: Riddle Songs by Stef Conner

There’s always been a medieval and folk music influence in our own label’s releases although often neglected for long periods. Recently, we’ve been exploring a little of that again, particularly the “Viking” sounds made popular by such artists as Wardruna and Eldrim.
Old English I first heard Old English in a track released in 1982 by a gospel progressive rock band called ArkAngel, Praises in…

My one issue with The Fosters spin-off, is that it will lack LGBTQ representation. On The Fosters we had Stef, Lena, Jude, Conner (RIP Jonner), Noah, Aaron, Monte, Cole and a whole bunch of others. As of right now, Callie and Mariana are straight.
I honestly hope that Mariana comes out, because I will not accept this show being about a bunch of straight people.

i can’t remember if i’ve posted this here before, but if you’re at all interested in ancient languages/music i would highly recommend this project. it’s an attempt at “reconstructed babylonian-era music”, and while i can’t speak for the historical accuracy of the music, i CAN tell you that stef conner’s pronunciation of the akkadian is EXCELLENT and listening to it is a lot of fun

The Lost Warriors, from Hord Songs (2012)
By Stef Conner Performers: Lizzie Marshall (sop), Stef Conner (alto), Graham Bier (bass) Producer: Jon Hughes Text from the Old English poem The Wanderer
Stondeð nu on laste leofre duguþe weal wundrum heah, wyrmlicum fah. Eorlas fornoman asca þryþe, awæpen wælgifru, wyrd seo mære, ond þas stanhleoþu stormas cnyssað, hrið hreosende hrusan bindeð, wintres woma, þonne won cymeð, anipeð nihtscua, norþan onsendeð hreo hæglfarea hæleþum on andan.
Now there stands in the trace the beloved troop a wall, wondrously high, wound round with serpents. The warriors taken off by the glory of spears, the weapons greedy for slaughter, the famous fate (turn of events), and storms beat these rocky cliffs, falling frost fetters the earth, the harbinger of winter; Then dark comes, nightshadows deepen, from the north there comes  rough hailstorm in malice against men.
